Empty your hand. Win the round.

Play your cards in melds, add to the ones on the table and keep one last card to discard for the win.

Your turn at the table

A familiar little routine, every turn.

  1. Draw

Take one face-down card from the stock or the top face-up card from the discard pile.

  2. Play, if you like

Make melds. After your first meld, you can also add cards to any meld on the table.

  3. Discard

Place one card from your hand on the discard pile. The next player takes their turn.

Two ways to make a match

At least three cards, with something in common.

✓ Valid

Sets of three or four

3 or 4 cards of the same rank, in different suits: spades, hearts, clubs or diamonds. Two identical cards cannot share a set.

✓ Valid

Runs

At least 3 consecutive cards of the same suit. For example, the 5, 6 and 7 of hearts.

An ace belongs at either end.

Before the 2 or after the king. It never connects a king to a 2. A run has at most 13 cards and one ace, including any ace represented by a joker.

A joker lends a helping hand.

It replaces a missing card. Each meld needs at least as many natural cards as jokers: two natural cards and one joker work; one natural card and two jokers do not.

Got the right card? Take back the joker.

After opening, replace a joker on the table with the card it represents. Play that joker in a meld again during the same turn, before discarding.

Save the last card for the finish.

Keep one card while playing your melds, then discard it to empty your hand and win the round.

You may only discard a joker as your last card to win. A joker recovered from the table must instead be played again in a meld.

A few table details

Which cards do we use?

Two 52-card decks and six jokers: 110 cards in all. Each player gets 13 cards. One face-up card starts the discard pile.

Can I add to other players’ melds?

Yes, after laying your own first meld, including during that same turn. You can add to your own melds and everyone else’s.

Must I play a card taken from the discard pile?

No. You may keep it in your hand and discard a different card.

What if the stock runs out?

The discard pile is shuffled to make a new stock. The top discard stays face up on the table.

How long is a turn?

You have 45 seconds. If time runs out, your turn passes. Any unfinished joker exchange is undone.

How are remaining cards counted?

Cards 2–10 count their number, face cards 10, aces 11 and jokers 25. As a safeguard, after 120 turns, the lowest hand score wins.
